Art communicates with us. It can communicate in ways that are not intended by the artist. It can touch our soul and enrich our faith.
The Church has engaged the arts in many different ways throughout history, especially to assist with the spreading of the Gospel. Art was especially helpful during the Middle Ages, when most people were unable to read. Many paintings, stained-glass windows, and sculptures depicted the story of the Bible.
Look closely at the stained glass windows in our church. The depiction of the martyrdom of St. Stephen is awe-inspiring in its size and beauty.
Those windows in the main nave of the church depict the life of Christ, starting with the Annunciation and ending with Pentecost.
True to our patron saint in his role as the first deacon, the windows in the transepts depict the ministry of deacons.
There are even stained glass windows in the sacristy which are symbolic of the sacraments.
