It all starts with our Baptism, because at our Baptism, the first Sacrament of Initiation, we are enlightened by the grace of the Holy Spirit, incorporated into the Church and cleansed of sin (both original sin and personal sin.) In Baptism we live the Paschal Mystery because we pass from the death of sin into life.
At our Baptism we entered into a special relationship with God; we became adopted children of God. We became a new person, living a new life with new responsibilities, new values, new perspectives and new relationships within a new Catholic Christian family.
At our Baptism we became Christian, we put on Christ, we were Christ-ened. Christening describes how we live; we follow Jesus, and that challenges us and gives us the responsibility to act as the hands and feet of Jesus.
In the weeks to come we'll look at the various rites that are part of the celebration of Baptism, what they say and what they mean for us.
